Reading

The USD383 school district uses the Harcourt Storytown reading series to teach reading to our K-6 students.  You can visit the Harcourt Storytown website to access reading tips for parents, writing ideas for students, vocabulary help, basic grammar definitions, interactive language posters for ELL students, and information about the authors and illustrators featured in our textbook.  View the website.

We will cover one lesson per week.  A typical weeks schedule will look this way:
Monday: Introduce the new story for the week, the focus skill, and the new vocabulary.
Tuesday: Engage in an activity to help practice use of the focus skill, introduction to our weekly centers, 2 center rotations that are 20 minutes each.  Our centers consist of: independent reading, word work, work on writing, reading to a partner, and working with the teacher in a small group.
Wednesday: Introduction to the grammar skill of the week, 2 center rotations that are 20 minutes each
Thursday: Review and practice of the focus skill and the grammar skill, 2 center rotations that are 20 minutes each.
Friday: Finalizing and wrapping up weekly centers, writing project.

Students can expect homework each night.  Please check the blog for daily assignments.
